Chocolate chip cookies were created by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1937-1938 at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. As a dietitian and chef, she invented the cookie by breaking up a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar and adding it to a butter cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to melt.

• 1 cup butter, softened
• ¾ cup brown sugar
• ¾ cup white sugar
• 2 eggs, beaten whole
• 1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 1 teaspoon hot water
• 2 ¼ cups flour
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 1 cup chopped nuts (often walnuts or pecans)
• 2 bars (7 oz. each) Nestlé’s yellow label chocolate, semi-sweet, cut in pieces

Sugar cookies originated with German Protestant settlers in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, in the 1700s.
