Chocolate chip cookies were created by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1937-1938 at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. As a dietitian and chef, she invented the cookie by breaking up a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar and adding it to a butter cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to melt.
Sugar cookies originated with German Protestant settlers in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, in the 1700s.
